Snowpenings
When I was a wee 21-year-old, nothing, not even a blizzard kept me from going to the bars. If you're out and about today (against the advice of Mayor Sly James), here are a list of places that are open. We'll update through the day. Comment, tweet or facebook us if you know anything. Ren Fest

One of the most visually interesting festivals Kansas City offers is the Renaissance Festival. The costumes are truly a work of art. You can see and feel the passion for historical accuracy of the costumes and for the festival itself. My favorite thing about Ren Fest (and this is no surprise) are the turkey legs. I've got a one track mind and it's mostly food.
Every weekend, there's a different theme for the festival. This is the last weekend to attend and the theme is Oktoberfest for the dates of October 12 & 13. There will be a Farmer's Market,Trick-or-Treating, a Fairy House Auction, Craft Beer and Wine Tastings, a Costume Contest, an Eating Contest and the Renaissance Romance Contest. The final day is actually Monday, October 14.
If you find time, try to squeeze a bit of the past into your year. Tickets are $19.95 at the gate and $16.95 in advance. Plus there's free parking! Click here for map and directions.

Metcalf South
When I first moved to Kansas City in 1991, Metcalf South was a pretty happening mall. My sisters and I spent a lot of time out there goofing off, waiting for our parents. But it's been years since I've been back, and only to Macy's. I'm ashamed to say that I haven't even seen one movie at the gorgeous Glenwood Theater.
A friend chose Metcalf South for our weekly walk since the snow was piled outside in small mountains. We circled the three floors like hamsters trapped in a cage, seeing the same few stores over and over. It was monotonous, and being there was like stepping back in time. Way back before 1991 as I remember it anyway.
The empty stores left shadows of what was once there, from The Gap to Topsy's and Fox Photo. We did have a great time seeing ourselves reflected on the ceiling mirrors and curved reflective columns that distorted our images like funhouse mirrors.
It was a bit sad to see so many empty storefronts. Most shops were wholesale and not open to the public or service oriented businesses like a cat shelter. Maybe one day, Metcalf South will go by the wayside like Indian Springs Mall and disappear altogether. But for now, you can lace up your tennies, pull up your sweatpants up above your waist, swing those arms, and become a mall walker for just a little longer.

Retro Inferno

This is one of the coolest furniture shops I've ever been to and I'm embarrassed to say that this was my first time in. I still remember when they were in their original location across the street from the Bulldog on Main. The large inferno sign in the window always caught my eye. Their style is definitely in the mid-century modern era and it's all so gorgeous. The wall of starburst clocks and gray, tailored sofa were some of my favorites. Their second floor is chair heaven. If you love chairs as much as I do, then do yourself a favor and go sit in some of theirs. Super great collection.
